“Our Business Is Always Growing”

Willis began his maintenance business working estates on Lake Minnetonka with prominent social status in Minnesota. They were high-demand clients with extremely specific needs. This is where Willis honed his focus on attention to detail and hard work. Willis would be attentive to the smallest details of his client’s property taking pride in these properties as if they were his own. Willis taught this ethic to his employees and expected them to take the same pride in their work.

In the ’70s Ackerman’s Services expanded its clientele to include town homes, churches, and cemeteries. At that time, town homes were quite new, and most companies did not know how to maintain such a large multi-owner group of properties. Willis and John Ackerman leveraged their experience gained working on the estates of Minnetonka to develop a unique system based on efficiency and attention to detail allowing them to excel in servicing these types of properties. They also had begun working for churches that similarly fit the large properties format, but also added unique demands.

Schools also fit the large format model but demanded an extra level of safety that was extremely important. Due to the unpredictability of working around young students and increased foot traffic every employee needed to remain continually diligent. The ability to work in these unique conditions displays our level of service. Another service that benefits from our variety of specialized equipment is rough cutting in minimal maintenance areas due to the size of vegetation and difficult terrain.

In 1966, John Ackerman Willis’ son started working for Willis. Willis taught John that the best way to conduct business was to appreciate the intricate details and efficiently execute these tasks to the satisfaction of their clients. This edict was beneficial to both the clients and our business. In 1989, Willis passed away and John Ackerman took over the business. John renamed the business Grounds Maintenance Service Inc and has overseen continued expansion.

Churches had large parking lots, elaborate landscaping, large lawns, and beautiful gardens all requiring year-round maintenance. Churches which included cemeteries presented the difficulties of working around delicate headstones, and the standard of quality family members expected when visiting their loved ones. While continuing to do estates, townhomes, churches, and residential homes, we expanded into commercial properties, schools, and rough-cutting in low-maintenance areas. Commercial properties benefited from our large format mowing and appreciated our specialized equipment to manage this type of work. Schools also fit the large format model but demanded an extra level of safety that was extremely important

Quality, hard work, attention to detail, and efficiency are what sets us above our competition. We have excelled at our craft for multiple decades and have had the pleasure of continually servicing the same clients for multiple years. This standard of service has also allowed us to receive multiple commendations from our clients throughout the years which is a source of immense pride for our company.
